چکیده

II. Data Modeling Image segmentation is an essential step in many advanced imaging applications. Accurate segmentation is required for volume measurements, medical diagnosis, image guided procedures, and 3D rendering. In this paper, we have developed a new multiresolution algorithm that extends the well-known expectation maximization (EM) algorithm. The proposed algorithm is based on generating scaled versions of the original image using wavelet analysis. We used synthetic images for tests and produced the results in confusion matrix so that it is easy to be understood, which proved more accurate segmentation than EM algorithm. Moreover we have applied our algorithm on real magnetic resonance image (MRI) of the human brain. A set of observed data X={xi | I=1,... N} can be modeled as to be generated from a mixture of random processes X1, X2, ... XK, with joint probability distribution . It is usually assumed that the processes represent independent identically distributed random variables, then we can write ) ,... , ( 2 1 K X X X f ) θ , f( ) ,... , ( 1 2 1 ∏ = = K k k K x X X X f

MR-Brain Image Segmentation Using Gaussian Multiresolution Analysis and the EM Algorithm

We present a MR image segmentation algorithm based on the conventional Expectation Maximization (EM) algorithm and the multiresolution analysis of images. Although the EM algorithm was used in MRI brain segmentation, as well as, image segmentation in general, it fails to utilize the strong spatial correlation between neighboring pixels. The multiresolution-based image segmentation techniques, w...

Comparison of Em Algorithm with a Guassian Multiresolution Algorithm for Mri Segmentation

Segmentation of anatomical regions of brain is fundamental problem in medical image analysis. In general, segmentation is process in which object is divided into its constituents parts. In this paper, MRI of brain is divided into its constituent’s parts which may be used for medical diagnosis purpose. Consequently we used statistical approach to segment the brain image. Using this approach, we ...

On Speeding up the Em Algorithm in Pattern Recognition: a Comparison of Incremental and Multiresolution Kd-tree-based Approaches

Finite mixture models implemented via the EM algorithm are being increasingly used in a wide range of problems in the context of unsupervised statistical pattern recognition. As each E-step visits each feature vector on a given iteration, the EM algorithm requires considerable computation time in its application to large data sets. We consider two approaches, an incremental EM (IEM) algorithm a...

A New Multiresolution Algorithm for Image Segmentation

The current literature on MRI segmentation methods is reviewed. Particular emphasis is placed on the relative merits of single image versus multispectral segmentation, and supervised versus unsupervised segmentation methods. Image preprocessing and registration are discussed, as well as methods of validation. In this paper, we present a new multiresolution algorithm that extends the wellknown E...

A multiresolution EM algorithm for unsupervised image classification

We take beneet from a causal Markov model deened on a quadtree to derive a multiresolution EM algorithm for unsupervised image classiication. This algorithm is an eecient alternative to expensive or approximate EM algorithms associated with Markov Random Fields. We show on synthetic and real images that our algorithm also provides good or even better results than those obtained by spatial MRF m...

Resolution Mosaic EM Algorithm

Multiresolution analysis is an established part of the human vision system. It builds different representations of an image with a spatial resolution adapted to the size of objects of interest and to its level of relevance. Multiresolution analysis is an efficient tool for image segmentation. It allows the processing of global features as well as local features in a corresponding proper scale. ...
